The city vehicle was struck when the operator was inside the store and the other unknown vehicle left the scene. The CVS parking lot is a thru-way for the public to access and park for the store. The weather at the time was partly cloudy and the road conditions were dry. On arrival, I met the driver of the city vehicle identified as William Bertrand (MA D/L# S24973075). The vehicle is a 2016 Ford Escape color black with MA registration # M2534A and is labeled as vehicle number 304. Mr. Bertrand stated he was parked in the lot and went inside the store. The Escape was parked in the seventh spot in from the parking stalls closet to the entrance of the store. He then came out and observed that the vehicle had been struck on it's rear driver's side quarter panel area. He says the other vehicle had left the scene and no note was left on his vehicle. I observed numerous scrape marks to that mentioned area and I took digital photos of the damage. I also observed two small specks of paint on the damaged area that were a bluish gray type of color from the suspect vehicle. MV2 sustained damage to its front driver's side door. I confirmed with both operators and neither reported any injury. Upon speaking with the operator of MV1, they stated that they took issue to the way the operator of MV2 was driving around a rotary in The Town Of Brookline (Newton St. and Lagrange St.). They then proceeded in the same direction as MV2 and when they both were in the parking lot of 225 Boylston St., they attempted to pull their vehicle along side MV2 to voice their disapproval. They then proceeded to 225 Boylston St. to make a return of an item they had purchased. It was when they attempted to turn MV2 left (southbound)/towards an open parking stall that MV1 proceeded from behind them and collided with their door. During my investigation, I ran all parties and the license plates to the respective vehicles they were operating. It was during this time that I discovered the operator of MV1's Driver's License is suspended and I confirmed this through dispatch. The weather at the time of this incident was overcast. The road surface in the area of the incident was mostly dry. Midland Avenue and Riverdale Avenue are both public ways in the City of Newton. I spoke with Mr. William Shea (S45354021), a foreman for Diaz Construction who was working on a job site next to 10 Midland Avenue at the time of the incident. Mr. Diaz stated while working with Mr. Silvestre Laneiro (S45163124) and Mr. Leonardo Alvarenga (S63414490), they observed a green Ford Taurus (MA: 6BF469) traveling towards the area of their job site while traveling North on Riverdale Avenue. Mr. Shea stated he observed a white male party vomiting what appeared to be blood out of the driver side window of the vehicle. Mr. Shea stated he then observed the vehicle's driver side area crash into numerous cement posts in front of 10 Midland Avenue (PSMJ Resources, Inc.) at a low rate of speed. The vehicle then traveling over a large mental plate in the roadway covering a trench and it continued down Riverdale Avenue until it crashed into the front driver side tire of a parked 1998 Volvo 828 rock truck owned by Diaz Construction. This vehicle was parked unoccupied on the roadway inside the jobsite. Mr. Shea stated they all went over to the vehicle to assist the driver, later identified as Mr. Richard Proia (S25282466). Mr. Shea stated there was a large amount of blood all over Mr. Proia's face, person, and vehicle and he was continuing to throw up blood. Mr. Proia was transported to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Boston by Newton Medics prior to my arrival. Due to Mr. Proia's condition at the time of his transport, Sgt. Michael Wade of the Newton Police Traffic Bureau contacted Trooper Mark Delaney of the Middlesex County CPAC who declined jurisdiction in the event that Mr. Proia succumbs to his injuries. I contacted Trooper John Paul from the MSP Reconstruction Unit to make him aware of the crash. MSP declined to respond. I notified Mr. Proia's daughter, Jennifer Proia, that her father had been transported to the hospital after being involved in the crash. Photos were taken of the crash scene and submitted to the IT Bureau. I observed damage to the front passenger side bumper/fender area of Mr. Proia's vehicle. I observed very minor damage to the front driver side tire area of the Volvo rock truck involved in the crash. Mr. Proia's vehicle was removed from the roadway by Tody's Towing. Officer Wilson canvassed the area for surveillance footage of the incident with a negative result. Sgt. Wade received a call from Dr. Grivetti (2021-10751) from the Medical Examiners Office a short time after Mr. Proia was transported to St. Elizabeths. Dr. Grivetti stated he received a call from the hospital notifying him that Mr. Proia has passed away and he was making notification to us.
